CHITTAGONG, Dec 18 (UNB): BNP was not allowed to hold rally in front of its Nasimon Bhaban office scheduled for 4:00 pm today.
Heavy riot geared police and elite force RAB strongly guarded the place and none of the party leaders or workers were allowed to enter the office building or assembling in front of it.
The Chittagong city BNP had announced the rally and procession to protest arrest and torture on its leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury MP and drum up support for tomorrow's half-day hartal in greater Chittagong.
A small group of BNP activists attempted to bring out a procession from one kilometer away from the Nasimon Bhaban. Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse them and arrested five persons including two women activists.
Police confirmed 30 BNP activists arrested till Saturday evening since Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was arrested in Dhaka early hours Thursday.
Meanwhile, his family expressed deep concern at the reported inhuman torture on Chowdhury in custody.
"We are afraid that my father might be killed," Hummon Quader Chowdhury, younger son of SQ Chowdhury, told a small group of journalists at his Goods Hill residence in the afternoon.
Expressing grave concern he said none of the family or his lawyers was allowed to see him. "We are not aware where he was detained and his condition."
"The way my father was tortured after the arrest has given reason for us to believe that he would be murdered," added the young Chowdhury.
He said police have cordoned off their house. None is allowed to move out or come in.
Asked about their old family relationship with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Hummun said she (Hasina) may not be aware of the amount of torture meted out to his father.
He also expressed worries at the arrest and harassment of those protesting the police action on his father.
Another report adds: Family members of detained BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury MP have requested the Prime Minister to stop torture on him under police custody.
SQ Chowdhury's daughter Farzin Quader Chowdhury flanked by her mother, brother and other members made the appeal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressing a press briefing at SQ's Dhanmondi residence in the capital this (Saturday) evening.
