BNP observes mass sit-in

Opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia Wednesday urged the government to return to the path of democracy, people and welfare, otherwise, she cautioned that the consequences will not be good, report agencies.
"There is still time…If you want to complete your full term in office, come to the right path," she issued the tough warning from a 'mass sit-in' staged on the premises of the Engineers Institution.
BNP observed a four-hour mass sit-in at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh in the city Wednesday protesting the government's "interference in the judicial system".
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had announced the programme at a rally in Dhaka last month.
This is the first BNP-led four-party opposition's anti-government protest since the Awami League came to power in January 2009. The allies Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Oikya Jote and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) have also joined the programme.
In her fierce remarks Khaleda who led the four-hour sit-in said "We've tolerated a lot...If they attack us again, there will be counter-attack."
On the June 27 hartal, the BNP chief said hartal was called not for her personal or party interests; it was called to protest against the misery of the public.
About Chittagong City Corporation polls, Khaleda asked the Election Commission to ensure free and fair vote, otherwise, she warned that mass movement will be built from the polling day against any rigging or nepotism.
"It is a test for the election commission…If there is any nepotism or rigging then mass movement will be built up from election day," she said.
A large number of police and Rapid Action Battalion personnel were deployed around the area. A stage had been set up at the Institution premises. Loudspeakers were installed from Shahbagh through to Kadam fountain.
Khaleda attended the programme as chief guest.
