BNP public meeting begins in city

Monday, 20 January 2014

BNP’s mass rally at the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan  began in the afternoon today (Monday) to formally thank the country’s people for what the party said boycotting the January 5 polls.
The rally began around 2:15 pm with the recitation of verses from the holy Quran.
BNP publicity secretary Zainul Abdin Farroque is moderating the rally, according to a news agency.
As part of its countrywide programme and the first after the national election, the party is holding the rally in the city, apparently to stage a showdown.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address the rally.
On January 15, Khaleda announced the programme from a crowded press conference in the city.
Similar rallies are also being held in all divisional cities, district towns and upazila headquarters.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Sunday night gave the party permission with some conditions for holding the rally.
Senior BNP leaders and top leaders of 18-party have already arrived at the rally venue. However, no senior Jamaat leader was seen at the stage until 3pm.
