BNP questions govt silence over Alam

Thursday, 1 July 2010

Opposition BNP has blamed the government for playing a 'mysterious role' over the whereabouts of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Ward Councillor Chowdhury Alam, reports UNB.
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain while addressing a press briefing in the city Wednesday said it is the responsibility of the government and police to investigate when an ordinary citizen goes missing.
But he alleged that the government remained 'unconcerned and silent' while a living person and elected Ward Councillor of DCC Chowdhury Alam, also member of the national executive committee of the BNP, has been missing for the last five days.
"Such behaviour is not good but mysterious," he told reporters, asking the government to immediately take necessary steps to find out Mr Alam's whereabouts.
The BNP secretary general regretted the fact that the Home minister did not meet a delegation of BNP Tuesday, which apparently proves that the Home minister knows about the matter.
He told the reporters that police refused to accept general diary (GD) at Shere-Bangla-Nagar police station when family members of Mr Alam went several times to file GD.
Asked whether they are apprehending secret killing of Mr Alam, Mr Delwar said extrajudicial killings have gone up massively after the Awami League government assumed power.
He said US State Department and various Human Rights organisations have already expressed concern over the extrajudicial killings under the current government.
