BNP rejects SC verdict on CG system

Thursday, 12 May 2011

Opposition BNP has rejected the Supreme Court (SC) verdict that declared void the caretaker government (CG) system and held the 13th amendment providing for the system contradictory to the Constitution, reports UNB. Giving the party's formal reaction at a press briefing Wednesday, BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed said the people and parliament are not bound to obey the verdict. In a written statement, he said the verdict is a manifestation of views of the government expressed by its leaders at different times. Moudud felt that the verdict would pave the way for holding general election under political government, a desire implicitly expressed by the Prime Minister in her recent statements. He pointed to the fact that the verdict was not unanimous. Some of the judges of the bench differed with the verdict showing differences in opinions among the judges. Replying to a question, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will not participate in the next general election if held without the caretaker government. MK Anwar and other leaders of the party were present at the press briefing held at the BNP central office.
