BNP rises like a phoenix after repeated destruction threats, says Fakhrul

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 2 September 2025

Time and again the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has faced threats of being destroyed, but it has risen like a phoenix bird, BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday.
He told the media after paying tributes to party founder Late Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in the city on Monday, marking the 47th founding anniversary of BNP.
BNP believes that elections will be held in February and the party will provide all-out support for the elections to be held in time, he said.
"The challenge before us is to provide all-out cooperation and assistance in ensuring that the elections scheduled for February next year are conducted smoothly," Mirza Fakhrul also said, adding that BNP has provided all-out cooperation in the reforms proposed by the reform commissions.
Stating that attempts have been made to destroy BNP repeatedly, the party's secretary general said false cases have been filed against six million leaders and activists to wipe out the BNP, about 20,000 people have been killed, and 1,700 leaders and activists have been made to disappear.
Despite this, the BNP has repeatedly fought to restore democracy.
Repeated attempts have been made to destroy the BNP but the party has risen like a phoenix following the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and party chairperson Khaleda Zia, he continued.
Mirza Fakhrul said if BNP can come to power with support of the people under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the party's acting chairman, it will bring about political change as well as economic growth.
"Through this, the country will move forward," he added.
