As change of guards in different tiers of the former ruling party was in the offing, former Dhaka city BNP president and mayor Sadeq Hossain Khoka Tuesday said after the chairperson the secretary general has an important role in keeping the party united at this crucial hour, reports UNB.
"It is a demand of the time and reality that we will have to unitedly face government's hostile attitude towards BNP. Situation is like that our back has been pressed against the wall. So statements attacking one another will not bring any good," Khoka observed.
Talking to some reporters at the Nagar Bhaban Mayor office he said all should remain united on the question of strengthening the hands of Khaleda Zia.
He said party secretary-general Khondoker Delwar Hossain had played an important role in the critical time during the military-backed caretaker government, but responsibility would have to be carried out every moment.
Asked whether the secretary general has any biased attitude towards anyone, Khoka said, "It is our responsibility to extend cooperation to the secretary general. If anyone thinks it will go without our participation, then we will have to carry out work under the directive of Khaleda Zia."
Asked when the new committee of city BNP will be formed, he said the BNP chairperson would form it at a convenient time. Certainly she would not keep any vacuum in the city-BNP leadership.
Replying to a question, he said the party chairperson has asked him to take all-out preparations to mobilise party activists, workers and supporters to the public meeting at Paltan Maidan on May 2 so that the public gathering is no less in any respect than Awami League's May Day rally at the same venue.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the labour wing of BNP, will organise the rally to mark the May Day 2009. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is scheduled to address the meeting.
Referring to the April 22 BNP rally at Muktangon after the notice was served asking Khaleda to vacate her cantonment residence, he said a huge turnout of people at the rally at short notice proved that greater population has support to BNP and Khaleda Zia.
Khoka, who is tipped to have a fair chance in the process of reorganizing the party, said basically the city BNP under his leadership organized the rally.
Asked about his absence from a recent preparatory meeting for May 2 public meeting, he said the secretary general did not tell him.
