BNP should take part in polls, says Gen Mahbub

Monday, 7 July 2008

BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman Sunday said that in the present context, his party should take part in both local and national polls to restore democracy in the country, reports BSS.

The pro-reform BNP leader told the news agency that a discussion could be held with the government about his party's participation in the polls. He also felt the need for discussions within the party forum to take decision in this regard.

Lt Gen (Rtd) Mahbubur Rahman said those who had already announced to resist the local polls did not say anything about how they would make it happen.

"The people of the country want election," he said and dubbed the announcement to resist the polls as negative politics.

Replying to a question, the BNP leader said the party leaders who were taking part in the forthcoming local polls would be considered as candidates. It would not be wise to take any action against them, he added.

About unity of the BNP, Mahbubur Rahman said: "Unity of the nationalist forces is the demand of the time. Almost all party leaders and activists, including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia want unity."
