BNP slams govt for growing ‘repressive’ acts

Senior BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Saturday accused the government of frequently arresting and harassing its leaders and activists in a bid to suppress their movement. “Assuming office through a voter-less election, the government is conspiring to destroy democracy. They’re arresting opposition leaders and activists in false cases to cling to power. The repressive acts won’t help suppress our movement,” he said. Khan, also a BNP standing committee member, was addressing a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the Independence Day. Voicing deep concern over what he said slide in law and order, the BNP leader said, “An unbearable situation is prevailing across the country. No body is safe anywhere. Dead bodies are being found regularly. The opposition men are being harassed, tortured and made disappeared,” according to a news agency.
