BNP smells govt plot behind non-deployment of army

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

The BNP is alleging that the refusal of the Election Commission (EC) to deploy the army for the Bhola-3 by-election is part of a plot to fulfil the ruling party's desire, reports UNB.
Following other party seniors in recent days, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi repeated the allegation Tuesday while addressing a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.
He said the 'anarchy' that was created in Bhola-3 constituency (Lalmohan-Tojumuddin) following the violation of the election code of conduct by the ruling Awami League (AL) since the announcement of the by-election schedule was still rife. The situation was apparently deteriorating day by day, he added.
Mentioning some incidents of attacks and violence Monday on the campaign trail of the BNP and its front organisations, he said no action was taken against the perpetrators.
Rizvi further alleged that the AL's armed cadres were threatening women voters in remote villages of Lalmohan that they (women) would be assaulted if they would go to polling centres to cast their votes.
He said the Election Commission was not performing its role set by the constitution properly.
