Wednesday, 31 October 2007

The Standing Committee of BNP at a meeting Monday midnight made M Saifur Rahman acting chairperson and Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed acting secretary general of the party, reports UNB.
Announcing the decisions, a party press release handed over to the waiting newsmen said the changes were made in the greater interest of the party and its unity.
Seven members of the standing committee attended the meeting presided over by Saifur Rahman. Held at the Gulshan residence of Saifur Rahman, the meeting lasted till 12 midnight.
The press release said the meeting took stock of the political, social and economic situation prevailing in the country before reaching the decisions unanimously.
It said the meeting considered the health condition of aging acting secretary general Khondokar Delwar Hossain and replaced him with vice-president Hafizuddin Ahmed. Saifur Rahman was made acting chairman in the absence of chairperson Khaleda Zia who was thrown behind the bars on charges of corruption.
The meeting felt that chairperson Khaleda Zia had appointed Khondokar Delwar Hossain without knowing the minds of the party workers and leaders as she had been kept isolated for a long time from them in the absence of political activities.
The decision on the appointment of Delwar was made just before the chairperson was taken to the prison and had not been approved by the standing committee, added the press release.
Emphasising the need for the party unity, the meeting viewed that a divided BNP would face disaster in the upcoming elections.
Evaluating the prevailing situation and considering the greater interest and unity of the party, the standing committee under section 5 (ga) of the party constitution withdrew the expulsion of Abdul Mannan Bhuiya, Ashraf Hossain and M Hasan Tripti.
The meeting also decided to reinstate Mannan Bhuiyan in the standing committee.
While taking the decisions, the meeting said the committee would abide by the steps that would be taken by chairperson Khaleda Zia as and when she is freed from jail.
Expressing loyalty to the leadership of Khaleda Zia and faith in the ideals of assassinated President Ziaur Rahman, the meeting decided to take all possible legal measures to secure early release of Khaleda.
Seven out of 12 members of the standing committee, the highest policymaking body of BNP, were present at the meeting. They are Saifur Rahman, Lt General (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Shamsul Islam, Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui, RA Gani, Advocate Mahbubuddin Ahmed and Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan who was reinstated in the committee.
Three others - Khaleda Zia, Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Dr Mosharraf Hossain-are behind the bars while Khandaker Delwar Hossain and Abdul Matin Chowdhury were conspicuous by their absence from the meeting.
The meeting appealed to the government for early withdrawal of emergency and also the ban on political activities for ensuring basic rights of the people.
The meeting urged the government for taking effective measures to check spiraling prices of essentials.
Meanwhile, BNP acting office secretary Rizvi, loyal to Khondokar Delwar Hossain, sharply reacted to the decisions taken at the meeting presided over by Saifur Rahman.
