BNP to field honest people for local govt polls: Hafiz

Sunday, 11 November 2007

Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, acting BNP Secretary General nominated by the standing committee, said they would participate in the coming city corporation and municipal elections, reports UNB.
Talking to journalists at his residence, he said honest and efficient people who were not involved in corruption would be nominated for the local government elections.
He urged the EC to formulate rules so that "honest people could contest the local elections".
Hafiz also urged the government to take steps so that prices of essential commodities remain within the buying capacity of the people.
Meanwhile, acting Office Secretary of BNP Rizvi Ahmed Saturday asserted that their Bangladesh Nationalist Party was united under the leadership of its detained chairperson Khaleda Zia, saying that "if necessary we will move forward by clutching her slippers."
He was bitterly critical of the Election Commission (EC) for inviting the dissident reformist faction of the immediate-past ruling party for dialogue on electoral reforms, following a tug-of-war.
"Under a conspiracy, the EC invited them (Saifur-Hafiz faction) to its dialogue," Rizvi, a former student leader, told journalists at the NAM apartment of BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain.
Rizvi observed that the Saifur-Hafiz faction did not have any link with BNP and their leadership had no legitimacy in the party forum.
He alleged that "uncompromising leader Khaleda Zia is being harassed by implicating her in false corruption cases".
Demanding release of the BNP chairperson and former premier, he said free and acceptable elections could not be possible minus Khaleda Zia.
"Khaleda Zia must be freed to hold free and impartial elections," said the up-and-coming BNP spokesman.
