BNP to gain from movement: Fakhrul
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 1 August 2023
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said they would succeed in the ongoing anti-government movement with substantial advancement in the struggle.
"Our victory is certain as we've advanced a lot," he said while addressing a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday.
The rally was staged in protest against attacks on BNP leaders and activists during sit-ins at different entry points in Dhaka city last Saturday.
"Awami League couldn't understand the googly from where the (cricket) ball is going," he uttered.
Mr Fakhrul said the government was so scared that it resorted to attacks on BNP leaders and activists during the mere sit-in programme in the capital.
Referring to their July 28 grand rally, the BNP secretary general claimed that an estimated 5.0-million people participated in the programme.
"We'll soon announce our 'oust-government' movement in consultation with other like-minded people," he said.
Mr Fakhrul criticised the government for beating party leader and freedom fighter Gayeshwar Chandra Roy mercilessly during a sit-in in the city on Friday.
He said the viral video on Gayeshwar taking lunch with an official of detective branch was sheer blackmail.
"Resign immediately, otherwise you (government) will not find ways to escape," he warned.
The BNP stalwart called upon government officials not to obstruct people's peaceful programmes.
BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said they would not return home until the fall of the government.
"If you (government) want to arrest, OK, arrest us. We are not scared. BNP is not a party of cowards…"
Mr Abbas alleged that his party leaders and workers were being arrested even from mosques and markets.
"Whatever the level of your oppression, our movement will continue. People have took an oath that none of them will return home until the government's ouster," he maintained.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said they would resist Awami League's peace rally.
BNP did not seek police permission earlier for a venue to hold Monday's rally.
From now on, party sources said, BNP would not seek police permission for any rally.
