FE Report
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is planning to induct some top leaders of Sector Commanders' Forum into its standing committee and nominate at least two of them as candidates for the upcoming election to city corporations.
The party is trying to distance itself from Jamaat and create an image of pro-liberation force, said a source in the BNP.
"If sector commanders are inducted in the top decision making body of the party, it will create a positive image among the people especially to the younger generation," he added.
The top leaders in the forum includes Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khandker, Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ur Rashid, Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, Maj Gen (retd) Shafiullah, Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, Lt Col (retd) Abu Osman Chowdhury, Lt Col (retd) Kazi Nuruzzaman, and Wing Commander (retd) Hamidullah.
Mr Khandker was elected a member of parliament in the December 29 election. He is now the planning minister of the Awami League-led Mahajote government.
The party is also mulling to nominate top freedom fighters in the Dhaka and Chittagong City Corporation polls to project itself a pro-liberation force, the source said.
"Most of the top BNP leaders in the cities either have corrupt image or have been implicated in corruption charges and it puts the party in a dilemma to choose the right candidates for the polls," he explained.
