BNP to take legal steps against govt move to erase Zia's name from establishments: Fakhrul

Sunday, 20 December 2009

BNP's new senior joint secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Saturday they would take legal steps if the government did not refrain from its reported move to erase late President Ziaur Rahman's name from different establishments in the country, particularly from Zia International Airport, reports UNB.
He also condemned and protested a certain quarter's "malicious campaign" against BNP's new senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman and asked the quarter to refrain from "such heinous activities."
The senior joint secretary general of BNP made the remarks at a press briefing at the party's Naya Paltan central office at 11:10 am. This was Mirza Fakhrul's first formal press briefing after becoming the senior joint secretary general of BNP on December 13.
Fakhrul alleged that recently a certain quarter in a concerted way had been carrying out malicious, character assassination campaign against late President Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
"An attempt was also made to involve Zia in the Bangabandhu murder case," he said.
He added: "Indecent posters focusing Tarique Rahman are also being made and circulated by a certain quarter."
The BNP senior joint secretary general also criticised the government's repressive measures against the opposition and filing of new cases against BNP leaders including Tarique Rahman.
He cautioned that the BNP would be forced to take to the street along with the people, apart from taking legal steps against "such ill-conceived and campaigns as well as the government move to erase Zia's name."
Fakhrul urged the government to maintain a fair democratic environment in the country shunning the repressive courses against the opposition.
BNP joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Jubo Dal organising secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon were also present at the press briefing.
