IMPLEMENTING JULY CHARTER

BNP urges constitutional approach

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 20 August 2025

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said they need to consider how to implement the agreed July Charter within the framework of the constitution.
Speaking to journalists at his Gulshan residence in the capital, he said, "If the charter document takes precedence over the constitution, it will set a bad precedent."
Salahuddin added that disagreements in the July Charter can be resolved through legal processes. "We see the July Charter as positive, but nothing should be done that sets a bad precedent in the future."
He described some issues in the draft charter as complex, saying that matters on which political parties have reached consensus still require discussion on implementation.
"Not only BNP, but many political parties have expressed dissent. Whatever consensus is reached will be implemented in the National Parliament," he said.
The BNP leader also stressed that the government has been formed according to the current constitution and no constitutional vacuum arose during the swearing-in. "If there is no violation of the constitution now, this [charter] issue is irrelevant."
He further expressed BNP's hope that elections will be held in February 2026. "Since the chief adviser has mentioned February elections, BNP sees no reason to fear the vote," he said.
