BNP urges EC not to bar DemocracyWatch from election observation

BNP joint secretary general Nazrul Islam Khan Monday met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda and requested him not to drop DemocracyWatch from the list of the election observers, reports UNB.
DemocracyWatch, a non-governmental watchdog, is run by Taleya Rehman, wife of journalist Shafiq Rehman. Taleya Rahman received Khaleda Zia when she had first gone to Shafiq Rahman's house where she had meeting with the chiefs of the four-party alliance.
This created some debates about Taleya Rahman's political link despite her being the chief of a non-party organisation.
"On behalf of BNP, I met the CEC to make it clear that due to personal relations of Taleya Rehman with Khaleda Zia, DemocracyWatch should not be dropped from the list of election observers," Khan told journalists after the meeting.
Later, Khan was admitted to the Heart Foundation Hospital in Mirpur for heart ailment. He is undergoing treatment at the CCU.
Anik Islam told the news agency that his father fell sick on the eve of their departure for his maternal grandfather's house in Sirajganj Monday afternoon.
