BNP urges int\\\'l HR bodies to look into BD right violations

Accusing the government of carrying out dreadful repressive accts, killing and forced disappearances to subdue the opposition, BNP Wednesday urged the international rights bodies to look into the matter in Bangladesh, reports UNB.
"The government has resorted to unprecedented political vendetta to suppress the opposition and those who hold different opinions by killing, making people disappeared and repressing them in the name of drive by joint forces," said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he also said, "Human rights are being utterly violated across the country. We condemn the government's such heinous acts."
It was the first press conference addressed by Fakhrul at the party office after nearly three months, as he reportedly went into hiding on October 30 amid the government's stern measures against the opposition ahead of the January 5 elections.
The BNP spokesman called upon the government to immediately stop repression, killing, forced disappearances and other extra-judicial killings.
He claimed that nearly 187 opposition leaders and activists were made disappeared and 294 killed by the law enforcers and ruling party cadres across the country in the last three months. "Even 10 people were killed extra-judicially in the last ten days."
The BNP leader demanded the government carry out a fair investigation into the incidents. "We think the international rights bodies also should come forward to investigate the extra-judicial killings in Bangladesh."
Fakhrul claimed the January 5 elections were not acceptable to the country's people and the international community as even 5 percent voters did not cast their votes in the polls.
