BNP urges public servants to discharge duties as per constitution

Govt using courts to divert one-point movement, alleges Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged on Saturday that the government is using courts to divert their ongoing one-point movement to oust the government.
He said that the court verdict against acting chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman was given for that reason.
He came up with the remarks at a rally organised by Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad in front of the National Press Club on Saturday.
The rally was organised in protest against the court verdict against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission.
"The people of the country have been struggling for realising their rights to votes and live," he said.
He termed Tarique Rahman as the leader of the country's 180 million people. He said that the people of Bangladesh who believe in country's sovereignty think that Ziaur Rahman upheld country's sovereignty. And Tarique Rahman has been following that.
He alleged that the government destroyed the country's election system by holding two elections in 2014 and 2018.
"This time they (government) will not get chance," he warned.
"This time there must be an election participated by the people. Today all opposition parties including the CPB are also demanding resignation of the government and free, fair and participatory elections under a neutral caretaker government," he stated.
Mr Fakhrul said that his party's leaders and activists could not stay at their respective homes during nights due to the filing of false cases and attacks by the government.
He alleged that his party leaders are being arrested even they are on bail.
"I saw a student leader with bullet injury. He was also assaulted with hammer, Is it democracy,? he stated.
He said that journalist community is being harassed due to Digital Security Act.
He called upon the government officials to discharge their duties properly and stand in favour of the country and people. He also called upon the officials not to carry out any illegal order of the government.
He also requested them to stand by with the oppressed people.
BNP vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain presided over the rally which was moderated by assistant secretary of BNP's Information and Research Affairs Qader Gani Chowdhury, journalists Kamal Uddin Sabuj, Syed Abdal Ahmed, Shahidul Islam, former pro-vice chancellor of Dhaka University AFM Yousuf Haider, Dr ABM Obaidul Islam of University Teachers Association of Bangladesh, Dhaka University teachers Prof Lutfur Rahman, Dr Md Siddiqur Rahman Khan, and Prof Al Mujaddedi Alfe Sani, among others, were present at the rally.
Meanwhile, leaders of like-minded nationalist alliance said on Saturday that a free, fair and participatory elections will not be possible under the present government.
They also vowed not to allow any farcical elections this time under the present government as happened in 2014 and 2018.
They said that elections must be held under a neutral caretaker government and if needed it could be under the direct supervision of the United Nations (UN).
