BNP vows to restore democracy

BNP vowed Sunday to restore democracy and establish people's voting rights through a strong struggle together with people, reports UNB.
"The government has imposed an autocratic rule on people through holding a lopsided election. We vow to initiate a struggle for restoring democracy and establishing people's voting rights," said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The BNP spokesman made the vow while talking to reporters after placing wreaths led by party chairperson Khaleda Zia at the grave of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, marking his 78th birth anniversary.
Expressing his optimism that their movement will be successful one, Fakhrul said, "We believe the autocratic regime will be ousted and people will come out victorious."
He alleged that the current 'autocratic regime' is trying to hang onto power by using force.
Fakhrul, however, refrained from answering to a volley of questions of the journalists about his 'hide-and-seek' role in the party.
Several thousand leaders and activists thronged the premises of Zia's mazar to pay their respect to the party founder on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Meanwhile, BNP and its associate bodies celebrated the 78th birth anniversary of late President and party founder Ziaur Rahman Sunday, reports UNB.
BNP leaders and workers, led by party chairperson Khaleda Zia, placed wreath and at Zia's grave in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at around 11:30 am.
Khaleda also offered fateha there and took part in a munajat with the party followers, seeking divine blessings for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Ziaur Rahman.
The BNP chairperson also inaugurated a voluntary blood donation programme arranged by Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and Zisas on the grave premises.
