FE REPORT | Sunday, 28 January 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) vowed on Saturday to unseat the government through their ongoing street movement.
Issuing a note of warning to the ruling Awami League (AL), Standing Committee member of BNP Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said his party has been on the movement to ring the bell of the government's departure.
"BNP has been on the streets to ring the departure bell of the government," he said at a brief rally before bringing out a black-flag procession in front of the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.
He said that their black-flag procession is a part of their ongoing peaceful movement against the government.
"The government will be compelled to quit power under the shade of the BNP's black-flag procession," said Mr Moyeen Khan.
"The government held the January 7 election by using state machinery," he said.
Mr Moyeen Khan accused the AL government of running the country in a colonial style, saying, "Bangladesh will not run under Delhi's dictation."
"Our movement will continue until the restoration of democracy in the country," he said.
BNP brought out black-flag procession to realise its demands that include release of all its detained leaders including party chairperson Khaleda Zia, dissolving the parliament, holding afresh election under a neutral caretaker government and arresting the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
Speaking at the rally, Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said that his party would bring out black-flag processions in all metropolitan cities and district and upazila towns on January 30.
"This government should not be considered as a legitimate government as they are getting backing from some foreign countries instead of the country people's support," he maintained.
He said, "This government is not for the people rather they (government) are a government backed by China, Russia and India."
It is the first time that the BNP held the brief rally and brought out black-flag procession in the capital after the 12th parliamentary election held on January 7, 2024.
The procession started in front of Nayapaltan party office and also terminated at Nayapaltan after marching throgh Kakrail Nightingale intersection, Fakirapool and Arambagh areas.
