BNP warns govt against protest foil bid

Saturday, 3 July 2010

BNP has warned the government of dire consequences if it attempts to foil the party's countrywide human-chain protest on July 7, reports bdnews24.com.
Secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain sounded the warning after a meeting of the largest opposition and its associate organisations on Friday to devise the ways for making the programme a success.
"We're preparing to peacefully observe the human-chain programme. The consequences will not bode well for the government if it tries to create obstacles or foil the programme as it did to hartal," he told reporters at a media briefing at the Naya Paltan headquarters of the party.
"I'd like to tell the government to stay sway from such illegal acts. Don't stop the human chain programme," he said after the joint meeting from 11.20am to 12.30pm.
Delwar said, "We will make the programme successful by engaging people from all walks of life. We will communicate with people of all classes."
The BNP secretary general proceeded to strongly criticise the government's 'repressive policy' and claimed that the government's 'true' nature was unveiled by the activities of their party members in the June 27 countrywide general strike.
"It was an illegal and undemocratic attempt by the government", he added.
The secretary general announced the programme at the June 28 rally at Muktangan, organised in protest against the arrests and 'torture' of party leaders and activists, including standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice-president Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and MP Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie during the
shutdown.
