BNP won't return home if govt obstructs blockade: Moudud

Sunday, 9 December 2012

Sounding a strong note of warning, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said the opposition activists will not return home from the streets if the government obstructs their today's (Sunday) nationwide eight-hour road blockade programme, reports UNB.
"The Awami League (AL) has declared to resist our blockade programme. But we want to tell the government that the opposition leaders and activists won't return home this time …we'll give a befitting reply to your attacks together with people," he said.
He came up with threat while addressing a discussion, titled 'Democracy, Good Governance and Human rights: Perspective Bangladesh'.
Bangladesh Sangskritik Ganotrantik Jote arranged the discussion at the Engineers' Institute, marking the International Human Rights Day. Moudud said they will observe their 6.00am-to-2.00 pm road blockade programme across the country in a peaceful manner.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia declared the road blockade programme from a public rally of the BNP-led 18-party alliance on November 28 to press home their various demands, mainly for restoration of the caretaker government to oversee the next general election.
Terming the blockade programme a trick to save the war criminals, senior ruling party leaders on various occasions recently urged BNP to withdraw the programme. They also threatened to face the opposition on the streets if they try to create any anarchy in the country in the name of road blockade.
Reacting to the threat of the ruling party leaders, Moudud said if the law enforcers and ruling party activists try to unleash violence by attacking the opposition activists this will lead to their fall.
He also said that though Awami League leaders are saying that they would resist the BNP's movement, Awami League has no strength to prevent its movement.
About Ershad's announcement to quit the grand alliance, he said that not only Ershad but also other partners will quit it at one stage of the movement.
He once again urged the government to meet their demand for restoration of the caretaker government to break the political stalemate over the issue. "Still, there is time, meet our demand." At one stage, Moudud said, the government will be forced to accept the demand of the 18-party alliance as the movement of people never failed.
Jagpa president Shafiul Alam Prodhan and member secretary of BNP Dhaka city unit Abdus Salam, among others, addressed the programme held with Bangladesh Sangskritik Ganotrantik Jote president Humayun Kabir Bepari in the chair.
