Thursday, 1 July 2010

The BNP Parliamentary Party (BNPPP) formed a human chain on parliament premises Wednesday demanding release of the leaders arrested during Sunday's shutdown, reports bdnews24.com.
Senior leaders, including Moudud Ahmed, Opposition Chief Whip Zainal Abdin Farroque, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury and Abul Khayer Chowdhury attended the hour-long programme begun about 10:30am.
BNP's key ally Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Hamidur Rahman Azad and Shamsul Islam also joined the programme.
The leaders demanded release of BNP lawmaker Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie for medical treatment abroad. Mr Annie is currently undergoing treatment at the United Hospital in Dhaka.
Mr Moudud condemned the arrests saying, "This is not the attitude of a democratic government." He also demanded immediate release of the leaders.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the BNPPP demanded a judicial inquiry into the attack on its senior leaders during the hartal.
Former minister Mirza Abbas, former foreign secretary Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and lawmaker Annie were arrested during the general strike.
