BNP's council to be held end of December Khaleda asks govt not to force them into movement
Monday, 27 July 2009
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia Saturday declared that her party's national council will be held towards this yearend, taking time beyond the Election Commission-set deadline, as they do not want to hastily stage an 'imposed council', reports UNB.
"We've issued letters about the council. We're consolidating party at grassroots level. People know BNP believes in democracy, runs the country and the party democratically," Khaleda Zia told a delegation of the newly elected office bearers of Thakurgaon district bar association and Thakurgaon Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum who met her at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office Saturday.
The Election Comm-ission had given the political parties up to July 25 (Saturday) to hold their council sessions and submit their amended party constitutions in compliance with the amended RPO. The ruling Awami League, Jatiya Party and few others held respective council Friday and submitted their council-approved amended constitutions Saturday.
The main opposition BNP petitioned the EC and took time for holding the council by putting their house in order.
Khaleda urged the government to fulfil its commitments made to the people by stopping implementation of the commitments given to the 'aliens' who she said put them to power.
Without naming India, the former PM said the government was out to find a ploy to give concession on Tipaimukh Dam and maritime boundary, allow corridor through the planned Asian Highway as well as trying to lease out gas fields to stay in power.
She gave a veiled warning of movement to protect national interests, in such a situation. "We do not support hartal, arson or ransacking. Don't do anything against the national interest and force us to go for movement," she told the government.
Khaleda urged the lawyers to fight legal battles in court while her party will agitate on streets to protect the interests of the country.
The BNP chief alleged that the government failed to control prices of essentials and improve the law-and-order situation.
Newly elected Thak-urgaon Bar Association president Abdul Halim and general secretary Atiqur Rahman and BNP leaders Barrister Maudud Ahmed, Khondoker Delwar Hossain, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also spoke at the meeting.
Khaleda alleged that BNP was not defeated by people's vote at the last polls but was made to suffer defeat by stuffing ballot boxes with ballots printed at a special place.
She said it should be the first task of the present government to hold trial of the people in the previous caretaker government for corruption and damaging the interests of the country.
However, she lamented, "the government refrained from holding the trial as the past caretaker regime was the product of their movement…their failures will be shifted to this government".
