FE REPORT
The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has filed a contempt of court petition against Fazlur Rahman, adviser to the BNP chairperson, over derogatory comments about the tribunal and its proceedings.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim submitted the petition to International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on three separate grounds on Wednesday.
Contempt petition stated that during a talk-show on a private TV channel, Fazlur Rahman said he did not accept the tribunal as it was established to try the Razakars of 1971.
During the hearing, prosecutors presented a video clip from Channel 24's talk show "Muktobak : Rajnitir Torko-Bitorko", in which Fazlur said, "I do not accept this court. I do not accept the judgment of this court… I say this every day."
Prosecutor Tamim told the tribunal that Fazlur made the remarks 'without understanding the tribunal law'.
Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury stated that the tribunal act was enacted in 1973 and allow the court to try crimes against humanity committed before and after that year. The court also noted that "prosecution is an integrated part of the tribunal" The tribunal described the allegations against Fazlur 'serious' and set November 30 for the hearing.
