BNP's ninth round of blockade from Sunday

FE REPORT | Friday, 1 December 2023

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced on Thursday its ninth round of countrywide blockade programme for Sunday to realise some longstanding demands.
The blockade programme will start at 6:00 am Sunday and continue until 6:00 am.
Senior joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a virtual press briefing announced his party's fresh programme.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of BNP and other like-minded parties brought out processions at different places in the capital during a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Thursday.
The opposition parties have been on a movement to realise their demands including cancellation of the 12th parliamentary election, resignation of the government and holding national election under a neutral caretaker administration.
Leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies brought out a procession in Jurain area.
The procession terminated at Doyaganj after marching through Jurain level crossing and Mirhazaribagh.
Joint convener of Dhaka south BNP ANM Saiful Islam led the procession where local leaders and activists participated.
Meanwhile, leaders of the 12-party alliance also brought out a procession in Purana Paltan and Jatiya Press Club areas of the capital during hartal.
They said the ruling Awami League would not to be able to remain in power even after getting support from India and the Russian Federation.
They alleged that the government was playing 'a dangerous game' to continue to stay in power.
Spokesperson for the 12-party alliance Sahadat Hossain said the government and the Election Commission were trying to draw the opposition leaders to the upcoming elections.
He warned that the people of the country would not accept any farcical elections going to be arranged under the present regime.
Chief coordinator of the alliance Rahed Prodhan said, "Those who are trying to remain in power with the outsiders' support are the enemies of the country. People are requested to resist them."
Secretary general of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh Mohiuddin Ikram, chairman of Labour Party Lion Md Faruk Rahman and joint secretary general of Islami Oikya Jote Md Ilias Reza were present, among others.
Meanwhile, in another development several cocktails were blasted at around 3:05 pm near Dhaka Divisional Commissioner's office at Segunbaghicha in the capital.
However, there was no report of casualties. An official at Ramna Police Station told the media that they had heard the news of cocktail blast.
He said security was beefed up as an additional number of police personnel were deployed there.
Members of the law enforcing agencies, including police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), were on alert at different roundabouts and important places of the city to thwart any possible violence.
Earlier, BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami observed a countrywide hartal on October 29 following a clash between police and BNP supporters on the day before (October 28) that foiled the party's grand rally in the capital.
