BNP's anti-govt movement

BNP's three associate bodies to hold road marches Sept 16-17

FE REPORT | Thursday, 14 September 2023

Three associate bodies of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold a two-day youth road march from September 16 to drum up public support for their ongoing one-point demand.
The party in opposition has long been demanding for immediate resignation of the government and holding a free, fair and participatory election under a neutral caretaker government.
Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal will jointly organise the event.
Jubo Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku at a press briefing disclosed the schedule of the programme at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office on Wednesday.
The first day's march, he said, would start from Syedpur of Nilphamari and end in Dinajpur while parading through Dashmail of Rangpur on September 17.
The next day's march will start from Bogura and conclude in Rajshahi through covering Shantahar and Naogaon.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be present at the events as the chief guest.
Mr Tuku accused the government of steamrolling opposition leaders and activists, and filing false cases against the rank and file, including the top brass.
He alleged that the government was formed following a midnight vote before election day, and the entire world was well aware of this rigging.
"We (BNP) will disclose our next course of action after the youth road march. We will be able to topple the government through our seamless movement."
Mr Tuku said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was not getting proper health care as the government was yet to allow her to go abroad for receiving advanced treatment.
According to him, a culture of injustice and indemnity is prevailing across the country now.
The three associate bodies have announced plans to observe the two-day march aiming to realise the demands made by the opponents, including the BNP.
Swechchhasebak Dal president SM Jilani, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal acting president Rashed Iqbal Khan and general secretary Saif Mahmud Jewel and Jubo Dal acting general secretary Shafiqul Islam Milon were present at the briefing.
