Wednesday, 5 November 2008
Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has embarked on a long-term project titled ‘Sports for All’ to revive the traditional rural sports across the country, reports BSS.
In this respect, BOA has chalked out a programme that gets underway throughout the country with Rangpur being the venue for staging the first show tomorrow followed by Sylhet and Comilla.
Sylhet DSA has already announced the schedule to organise the programme on November 16 and in Comilla between the last week of November and the first week of December.
Rangpur DSA already started this programme Monday at the upazila level. The winners have already arrived at the Rangpur district headquarters. The DSA will organise a rally with winners of the upazila level at the Rangpur district town tomorrow before the final round competitions start at Rangpur Zila School.
A cultural show of local performers is scheduled in the evening after the conclusion of the competitions.
The programme has been designed to involve the general people, especially the working class in rural areas, who do not have time and opportunity to participate in sports. This project will allow them to recall the fond memories of childhood and also to get involved in traditional sports at least once in a day in a year.
This open-for-all meet in which the people regardless of age or experience will be able to take part. Each and every district can chalk out their own traditional sports events.
All the district sports association (DSA) with the support of BOA will hold the programme at their respective districts. BOA has drawn up a guideline which sports is to be played or included in the programme. DSAs also will be allowed to include or choose their own disciplines in the meet.
"Our prime target is to bring back those rural sports into practice which are almost forgotten " BOA CEO Col (retd) M. Wali Ullah told the news agency by telephone. Col Wali is already in Rangpur to see the preparation of this meet.
