Bodies of abducted Narayanganj panel mayor, 5 others recovered

NARAYANGANJ: The bodies of six people, including that of abducted panel mayor Nazrul Islam, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari Rivers Wednesday afternoon, three days after their abductions. Port thana police here recovered the floating body of Nazrul Islam, with his hands and legs tied up, around 3 pm from the Shitalakhya River near Kolagachhia Shnatinagar area. Nazrul’s wife, Selina Islam, identified the body which has partially decomposed, according to a news agency.
Four other bodies were recovered at the same time from the Dhaleshwari River. Among the four, two were identified as Nazrul’s associates Swapan and Tajul, while another as Ibrahim, driver of abducted lawyer Chandan Sarker. The body of another person could not be identified. Nazrul Islam and his three associates and his driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city Sunday. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted while they were going to Dhaka. Several hundred people thronged the river bank hearing the body-recovery news. A pall of gloom descended on the whole area after the recovery of the five bodies. Meanwhile, Nazrul Islam’s supporters staged violent demonstrations on Dhaka-Chittagong highway from Mouchak to Signboard area in the afternoon, disrupting traffic on the busy highway. However, the body of the missing lawyer could not be traced till Wednesday evening. In the wake of widespread protests over the frequent incidents of abduction, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of police, OCs of Fatullah and Siddhirganj police stations and three officials of Rab were withdrawn Tuesday.
