Bodo militants massacre 60 villagers in Assam

Wednesday, 24 December 2014

India's Bodo militants swooped on villages in different parts of Assam and massacred unarmed villagers on Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Indian media reports said Bodo ‘extremists’ killed at least 60 people, including 18 women and 19 children. Media reports, quoting Assam’s Additional Director General of police Pallab Bhattacharya, said Bodo ‘terrorists’ killed 60 adivasis in 5 different places in Assam. He said the death toll could rise. The attacks by the militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) took place in Kokrajhar Sonitpur districts of the north-eastern state, according to Inspector General of Police (law and order) SN Singh. The militants attacked the villages as a response to the intensified operation by the security forces, he said. The NDFB had on Monday triggered a grenade blast in Patgaon in Kokrajhar district, injuring three people. A joint team of Assam Police commandos and the Army had on Sunday killed 2 Bodo militants in neighbouring Chirang district, close to the Bhutan border. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said his government will not bow down to any militant threat. NDFB are opposed to the ongoing peace talks, according to a news agency.
