Body to scrutinise power tariff hike proposal

The interim government formed Monday a high-profile committee, headed by the Power Adviser Tapan Chowdhury, to scrutinise the proposed hike in the electricity tariff.
"We need to evaluate the proposal for further hike in the power tariff as any fresh upward adjustment could upset many," Finance Adviser ABM Azizul Islam said at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs at the secretariat.
He, however, informed newsmen that power tariffs in Bangladesh are still lower than that of many countries around the world.
The Power Adviser, however, said the committee is expected to place its reports to the government within a month.
The Power Division had placed the proposal for raising
