Bogra artisans busy making earthenware pots ahead of Pahela Boishakh

BOGRA, Apr 09: The artisans of the district are now busy preparing earthen toys ahead of Pahela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla calendar.
The district handicraft office (DHO) sources said the artisans make a handsome profit every year by selling their products in the Baishakhi fairs. Over 500 people from 200 families in 12 upazilas have been engaged with the profession for the last five decades.
While visiting different areas this correspondent found the artisans make varieties of toys along with glass, mug, pot, plate, jug and flowers vase from early in the morning to late at night. They also use different colours to make them more attractive.
Sources said small-size toys are sold at Tk 20 to Tk 30, middle ones at Tk 40 to Tk 60 and the large ones are sold at Tk 60 to Tk 100 in the fairs.
Artisan Nityo of Kumarpara village under Dupchanchia upazila said "The wholesalers visit our locality to purchase the earthen toys from the first week of Chaitra to last week of Jyestha."
Dupchanchia upazila chairman Abdul Gony Mandal urges the authority concerned to save the profession arranging easy-term loan facilities for the artisans.
He also laid emphasis on training courses so that the artisans can do their job more efficiently.
