Bogra cultivators achieve 72,432 tonnes of fish output in current fiscal

BOGRA, Jan 19: Around 72,432 tonnes of fish have so far been produced in the district in the current fiscal year 2016-2017.
Over 2500 fish farmers of the 12 upazilas have become self-reliant and improved their socio-economic condition through fish cultivation, the district Fisheries Department sources said.
Different varieties of fish have been cultivated around 14317.11 hectares of waterbody across the district. This year over 400 hectares of low-lying waterbodies have been brought under Ruhi and other indigenous species sweet water fishes, the sources added.
The indigenous fish species is in the way of declining from the last decade across the district frequent use of pesticide in the croplands.
Cultivators of Dupchanchia, Dhunot, Sherpur, Shariakandi, Shaonatola, Adamdighi, Kahaloo, Shibgonj and Sadar upazilas are trying to bring back the lost glory of the indigenous fishes in this district.
Per maund of Ruhi fish is being sold at Tk 4,000 to Tk 4,500 in retail market and the wholesale price is Tk 3800 to Tk 3900. Shing is being sold at Tk 8000 to Tk 9000, Magur at 10000 to Tk 12000, Koi at Tk 7000 to Tk 8000 and Pabda is being sold at Tk 13000 to Tk 14000 per mound round the year.
District fisheries officer Rawshon Ara said, "We are providing all sort of supports to the enthusiastic fish cultivators across the area to mitigate scarcity. We also arrange training courses for the fish cultivators."
