Bomb blast kills seven in Pakistan

Sunday, 21 October 2007

QUETTA, Oct 20(AFP): At least seven people were killed and six others were injured today when a bomb exploded in south western Pakistan, police said.
The blast happened as passengers were waiting at a mini-van stand in the main market in Dera Bugti in Baluchistan province, which is in the grip of a low-level insurgency.
"There was a bomb explosion in the main bazaar and seven people were killed and six are wounded," local police officer Hazoor Baksh told AFP.
The province is in the grip of sporadic violence launched by ethnic Baluch tribesmen and rebels two years ago.
Tribesmen in the sparsely populated province which borders Iran and Afghanistan have been demanding more political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the region's plentiful natural resources.
Tensions increased after rebel tribal chief Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed in a military operation in 2006 on his mountain hideout, sparking several days of riots and strikes.
