Bone-chilling cold wave, dense fog paralyse life in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA, Jan 23: Thousands of poor, ultra poor and rootless people of Chuadanga district are suffering greatly for lack of necessary warm cloths as cold wave is sweeping over the district.
The biting cold, dense fog and chilling winds crippled people's life in the district. The district meteorology office recorded the lowest temperature of the district at 10.6 and 10.11 degree celsius in the last two days. Mr Jahid  Hasan, district meteorology officer of  Chuadanga said, the  temperature may fall further in coming days in the district.
Boro farming is hampered as the day labourers could not work in the field in biting cold.
Many rickshaw and van pullers could not drive their vehicles and passed time away idly lack of passengers. Sometimes they were to sit idle wrapped in blankets on their vehicle.
'I could earn little income as I could not run my vehicle in such a biting cold,' said rickshaw puller Babu a resident of Chuadanga Mohila College para.     
Middle class and poor income men and women crowded in roadside second hand markets to purchase warm clothes to save themselves from chilling cold but the price of second-hand clothes had gone up by Tk 50 to Tk 100 against   the prices a week ago.   
Though some warm clothes were distributed among the poor and distressed people recently through district and Upazila administration, non-government and individual efforts but that was not sufficient against the necessity.  "We have called upon all affluent people to extend their helping hand to mitigate the suffering of the distressed people', said Mr Delwar Husain Deputy Commissioner of Chuadanga.
