FE Report | Sunday, 25 January 2015
A book containing memories and experiences of Bangladeshi diplomats in different missions across the world was launched in the city on Saturday.
The book titled "Serving the Nation: Reflections of Bangladesh Diplomats" is the first of its kind in the country.
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), in association with Academic Press and Publishers Library (APPL), organised the book launching ceremony at a restaurant in the city.
Eminent economist and former roving ambassador Prof Rehman Sobhan, The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, former foreign secretary and Ambassador Faruq A Choudhury and former diplomat Mohammed Mohsin, among others, were the guests of honour at the ceremony.
President of BEI Farooq Sobhan mediated the ceremony, which was attended, among others, by former ambassadors of Bangladesh Foreign Service, officials from foreign missions in Dhaka and members of the civil society.
Under the initiative and support of BEI, the book was published by the APPL, officials said.
The book demonstrates diplomatic memoires of 43 former ambassadors. It provides an insight into the trajectory of Bangladesh diplomacy through the eyes of the former ambassadors.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Rehman Sobhan said all Bangladeshi expatriates especially in the United States acted like diplomats during the 1971 Liberation War to stop genocide in Bangladesh, obtain recognition of the country's sovereignty and stop US aid to Pakistan.
Some former ambassadors said that the book would help the younger diplomats and country's policymakers on how they should play their role best relating to maintaining relationships with other countries in the coming days.
Mr Farooq Sobhan said it is the first volume of the book. The second volume will be published in the near future, he added.
The 455-page book would be available at the APPL stall at the Ekushey Book Fair. The price of the book has been mentioned as Tk 600 or US$ 25.
