Boro harvesting on in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, May 12: Harvesting of Boro paddy in five upazilas of Joypurhat district has started from this week. Though the harvesting is now at the initial stage, farmers are facing labour crisis and high cost of labour and they are worried over timely completion of harvest. On account of good weather this year Boro plantation and its growth has been very good and farmers are expecting a bumper production of Boro. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) expects this year's production will exceed the cultivation target. The office said that this year farmers of the district received all assistance from DAE and the weather has been fabourable too. Visiting some Boro fields this correspondent found that most of the paddy fields are ready for harvesting but farmers are not getting labourers for harvesting their crop. Small farmers are facing this problem more. In spite of labour shortage the farmers are happy over their high production of Boro. Gaibandha Another report from BSS adds: The farmers of the district are expecting a bumper production of Boro paddy during the current season. Official sources said Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) set a target to cultivate a total of 1, 19,735 hectares of land in the district this year. Later, the target fixed by the department was exceeded and a total of 1, 25,200 hectares of land were cultivated through bringing additional 5465 hectares with the production target of 4, 71,943 tones of rice. Of the total, some 19,200 hectares of land were cultivated in Sadar Upazila, 14,500 in Sadullapur Upazila, 12,750 in Palashbari Upazila, 30,800 in Gobindaganj Upazila, 24,500 in Sundarganj Upazila, 14,950 in Saghata Upazila and 8, 500 in Fulchhari Upazila in the district, sources said. Plant protection specialist of DAE Shafaet Hossain Sarker said favorable climatic condition, proper distribution of high quality seeds by BADC and BMDA and timely supply of fertilisers and other agri inputs to the growers for bumper production. The farmers of the district are cutting the paddy with much enthusiasm and getting desired production against their crop. But, many of the farmers alleged that they are being deprived of fair prices against their production cost as per maund (40 KGs) of raw paddy is being sold at Tk 600 in local markets. They also demanded of the government to fix the price rate of Boro paddy without delay as quick as possible at the greater interest of the farmers' community. To make the cultivation programme a grand success the commercial banks including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank also disbursed soft loan to the poor and the marginal farmers during the season. Talking to the news agency deputy director of DAE AH Bazlur Rashid said only 10 per cent harvest of the paddy has been completed and the full harvest will start here from the middle of the month. UNB from Madaripur adds: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) expects bumper production of boro paddy in Madaripur in the current season. DAE sources said favorable climate, sufficient rain in time and use of high yielding variety seeds and fertilizers made the possibility of bumper yield brighter. DAE officials said an extensive scheme has been taken up to bring to bring 44,311 hectares of land under boro cultivation in four Upazilas of the district with a production target of 1,68,417 metric tons of paddy this year. The news agency recently visited different areas of Sadar Upazila including Lakxmiganj, Rasti, Charmaguria, Panchkhola, Kalikapur and Mostafapur villages. Talking to the news agency, a good number of farmers expressed their optimism about bumper production of boro paddy.
