FARIDPUR, Apr 2: Farmers of Faridpur district are apprehending power shortage for irrigation during the current boro season resulting in a huge financial loss after their incurring losses in potato production.
Power Development Board (PDB) office of Faridpur also admitted that power crisis would not be resolved fully though initiative has been taken to ensure uninterrupted power through load management like the previous year.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a scheme has been taken up to bring 1,60,709 hectares land under boro cultivation in nine upazilas of the district with an output target of 5,60,250 tonnes of rice. The upazilas are Bhanga, Nagarkanda, Sadarpur, Charbhadrason, Boalmari, Madhukhali, Alfadanga, Shaltha and the Sadar Upazila.
Besides, a target has been set to bring more 75000 hectares under boro farming in BADC FGR project area. Irrigation will be provided through its 510 deep tubewells, source said.
Farmers said present supply of electricity is almost satisfactory. But they are apprehending power crisis from mid-February to March as the demand for electricity increases during the period.
They demanded that the government take measure immediately to ensure smooth supply of power during that time.
Meanwhile, PDB executive engineer of Faridpur area said, the zone gets 150 megawatt electricity daily against the demand of 200 megawatt.
But he said they would supply power through local management to ensure smooth irrigation in the current boro season.
