NILPHAMARI, Mar 30: Plantation of Boro has been completed in all the 6 Upazilas across Nilphamari district. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed the target of producing 3, 52,045 tonnes of paddy from 83,878 hectares of land in Nilphamari district in this Boro season. DAE sources said cultivation of hybrid variety is in 33,470 hectares of land to produce 1,58,983 tonnes of paddy and high yield variety in 50,408 hectares of land to produce 1,93,063 tonnes of paddy. Sources said easy availability and affordable price of fertilizer that include TSP, Totas and Urea and almost non-irritant electricity supply encouraged the farmers to increase their cultivable land. Sources added planted saplings are also growing as expected. Rivers drying up Rivers of Nilphamari district are drying up and almost turning into farmlands causing irrigation shortage during the past month. In the on-going IRRI - Boro season, farmers are in a hurry for planting IRRI and Boro seedlings on the river beds as late cultivation would culminate in late harvesting and the croplands may go under water in early rain causing damage to the crops. The fourteen rivers are now virtually dead which flowed across the 6 upazillas of the district. The rivers are Teesta, Buri Teesta, Kumlai, Deonai, Kalamdad, Buri Khora, Charal Kata, Khatamari, Dhaijan, Mora Dhaijan, Chikli, Kharkharia, Shalki, Jamuneswari and others. Except Teesta the rest of the rivers have been filled up with silt hampering irrigation facilities to the farmers.
