JAYPURHAT, May 12: Boro harvesting is going on in full swing in the district. Jaypurhat Agriculture Extension Department expected that production target might exceed in the running IRRI-Boro season.
According to DAE sources, 70 thousand hectares of land has been brought under boro cultivation this year while the target was 67,304 thousand hectares.
Hybrid type of boro was cultivated in 28 thousands 800 hectares and High Yielding Varieties type was cultivated in 38,504 hectares.
The production target of paddy was fixed at 277,440 tones which would be exceeded in the district this year thanks to good weather, according to the DAE sources.
Abdul Jabbar, a farmer of Vadsha village under Sadar Upazila said good boro production is expected this year despite draught and acute seed crisis.
"I have cultivated 3 acres of land spending about Tk 20 thousands per acre. I expect to harvest 90 to 100 maunds of boro paddy per acre," he added.
Abdullah Al Ahshan, a farmer of Mahaudpur under Akkelpur Upazila in the district said, "I cultivated 2 acres of land and I expect 100 maunds paddy. But we have a lot of problem to cultivate the crop this year. If we get the right price of the crop, we may benefit."
Farmers of several areas of the five Upazilas of the district told this correspondent that boro cultivation was hampered by inadequate supply of electricity, hot weather, seedling crisis etc. Notwithstanding, the farmers expected bumper production but they worried for the good price of the crop. Now boro paddy is selling in the market at Tk 500 per maund while government procurement rate is Tk 680.
Jaypurhat DAE Deputy Director Moshin Ali said this year cultivation target was achieved and production target might exceed because the weather was good and we advised farmers and provided them with information from time to time on good cultivation production.
