Boro production target unlikely to be achieved

Thursday, 26 March 2009

SYLHET, Mar 25 (UNB): The target of Boro paddy production may not be achieved in the current season in greater Sylhet region due to lack of rain.
Farmers said they cannot irrigate their land as most of the deep and shallow tube-wells have become inoperative due to abnormal fall in ground water level in the region.
Farmers have become worried as Boro lands have dried up and cracks developed in many areas due to shortage of irrigation.
Some 195,000 hectares have been brought under Boro cultivation this season in Sunamganj, 66,084 hectares in Sylhet, 105,000 hectares in Habiganj and 50,000 hectares in Moulvibazar districts, Department of Agriculture Extension sources said.
Fakhrul Alam, a farmer of Dakkhin Surma Upazila, said he brought 400 bighas of land under Boro cultivation this season but did not get diesel and fertiliser at subsidised rate given by the government.
