Boro yield may exceed target in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Dec 13: Farmers of 5 Upazila under Joypurhat district are taking preparations for boro cultivation and are now busy making boro seed bed on their land.
According to DAE sources, they have earmarked 70 thousand and 5 hundred hectares of land for boro cultivation in coming boro season while the target production has been set up for 2million tones. For the targeted land cultivation, about 4 thousand hectares of land have been used for boro seed bed where 2,400 tonnes boro seed have been sown with hybrid and high yielding Zirashail,BR-28, BR-29 China, and other local types boro paddy.
Alamgir Hossain, a farmer of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila told FE that he would cultivate 2 acres of land so he has sown 40 kg boro seed of different varieties. He explained that if the seedling's growth makes good then per bigha will need only 5 kg boro seed and hybrid will need 2kg per bigha.
Most of the farmers of different areas expressed the same view that this year's boro cultivation will be increased. Therefore they are taking good preparation.
Hybrid type boro paddy will be cultivated on 28 thousands and 800 hectares of land and High Yielding Varieties type will be cultivated on 38,504 hectares of land. The production may exceed the target this year, said the farmers and the DAE office.
