Bottle gourd cultivation turns lucrative in S'ganj

SIRAJGANJ, Apr 6: Cultivation of bottle gourd is gaining popularity in all the nine upazilas of the district because of low investment and good margin of profit.
Local markets are flooded with bottle gourd and being sold like hot cakes. The huge yield of bottle gourd has been attributed to the favourable climatic condition of the district. The soil of the district also is suitable for bottle gourd cultivation, agriculture experts said.
Each the plant produces 35 to 40 bottle gourds, which is sold at Tk 15 to Tk 35 per piece depending on size shape and quality.
Some bottle gourd growers said that they were getting an additional amount of Tk 3 thousand to 4 thousand every season selling the item after meeting their own demands.
The green variety is very demandable in the market as it is very tasty. The Bangla months Agrahayan to Chaitra is the best time for harvesting bottle gourd.
