Bottle-gourd cultivators in Joypurhat happy

JOYPURHAT, July 26: Bottle gourd cultivation has rapidly gained popularity in the whole of Joypurhat. Consumers love it because it is a delicious vegetable. This year, bottle gourd was cultivated on 5,000 acres in the district, said DAE sources.Amena Begum a housewife of Puranapail village under Sadar Upazila has made good profit from cultivating the vegetable. She grew bottle gourd on half a bigha of land and earned Tk 25,000 in six months. "I am very happy and have been really benefited from cultivating this vegetable," she said. "It doesn't need a lot of land and anybody can cultivate it on their own plot.
Like Amena Begum, many in the district were financially benefited through cultivation of bottle gourd. Jamal Uddin, a farmer of Dargapara under Panchbibi Upazila, is one. He said to this correspondent: "I cultivated bottle gourd on only one acre and earned Tk 1 lakh. It has great demand in the market."Hamidul Islam a vegetable trader of Natun Hat said most people ask for bottle gourd when they come to buy vegetable in the market. Deputy Director of Joypurhat DAE Mohsin Ali said: "Cultivation of bottle gourd is now widespread in the district. We encourage and support the cultivators in this respect. It also helps that there is great demand for this vegetable in the market."
