Boutique houses demand better deals

Speakers at a seminar urged the government to take measures to boost boutique industry as the yearly turnover of boutique houses is around Tk 60 billion equivalent to one per cent of the GDP of Bangladesh.
"Only in Dhaka City the yearly turn over of boutique houses is about Tk 30 billion with an investment of Tk 2.5 billion and its growth was 13 per cent last year," said Md Joynal Abedin, Assistant Secretary of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
He unveiled this at a seminar titled 'Contribution of Boutique House in Bangladesh Economy' held at Women's Voluntary Association (WVA) Auditorium, Dhanmondi in the city organised by Bangladesh Boutique House Owners' Association (BBHOA) Friday.
He said, "We have 5000 boutique houses across the country that have enormous contribution to the empowerment and economic betterment of women from metro to grassroots level and is a sector that deserves to be given attention."
Commerce Minister Md Faruk Khan attending as chief guest pledged his ministry's co-operation to develop the sector.
"The sector should be treated as importantly as the export sector that can bring the ultimate glory to the business."
"The commerce ministry would approve the Association as an individual trade body," he added.
He urged the SME Foundation to take initiatives to declare the sector as thrust sector and provide all sorts of support including low interest loan.
Syed Rezwanul Kabir, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SME Foundation said skills development programme would be taken up by the foundation to enhance human resource in this sector.
"Obstacles in getting loans must be reduced and we will take necessary initiatives in this regard", he added.
BBHOA President Poly Rashid, Zinat Ara Bhuia, President Dhaka Business and Professional Women's Club also spoke at the programme.
