BPGMEA for polypropylene sacks to stay along gunny bags

Plastic goods makers expressed concern over the government's initiative of making the use of jute bags in industries compulsory and urged not to issue any relevant SRO because it would be harmful to polypropylene sack sector.
A delegation of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) led by its President Jashim Uddin called on Industries Minister Dilip Barua at the latter's office in the city Wednesday.
They discussed various problems of plastic woven sector and government cooperation to this sector.
BPGMEA president welcomed the minister for giving his valuable time to the Association and said woven polypropylene (WPP) sack manufacturing is an emerging and fast growing sector in the plastic industry.
WPP bags are widely used for bagging of fertilizer, cement, building materials, salt and food grains. It also widely used at textile spinning mills, tea factories, detergents and soap manufacturers, dry food manufacturers, sugar mills, chemical plants and others.
Total 42 factories located in various parts of the country are manufacturing WPP bags with the investment of around Tk 15.00 billion. Export earning of the product have already reached about $ 30 million with the prospect of reaching $ 100 million in a short time.
The industries minister gave a patient hearing to the BPGMEA delegation and assured them of extending all possible cooperation to solve the problems. He said that the present government emphasised on the need for thriving industries and the industrialisation must be expedited accordingly. He assured the delegation of taking necessary steps for setting up the Plastic Industrial City soon.
