BPL ticket chaos undermines the event

Friday, 3 January 2025

What happened on the inaugural day of the 11th Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 was shameful and unacceptable.
Some cricket fans created barriers to the entry of a bus carrying cricketers. Even the protesters blocked the personal car of Khulna Tigers' captain, Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Angry fans also broke the main gate in protest against the ticketing system.
Later, the Bangladesh Army dispersed the angry fans to normalise the situation.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reserved 35 per cent of the total tickets for online selling. The rest, 65 per cent, is available on paper and from selected branches of a bank.
As there was no arrangement for selling tickets from the stadium premises, the fans protested and, at one stage, vandalised some parts of the stadium. It is sad that the BCB failed to manage the system of selling tickets properly.
A mobile application could be introduced to sell the ticket. It would be easy for viewers to purchase the tickets.
The BCB has spent a large amount of money to organise the BPL concert. Famous singers like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan were invited to perform, which is fine. But why didn't the BCB pay attention to making the ticket sale easier?
Tamim Iqbal, captain of the defending champions Fortune Barishal, rightly said that organisers should invest in the tournament, not concerts or other things. A fracas like this adds disorders and lawlessness to the chaos and anarchy reigning supreme. The interim government needs to look into the matter.
