BPO keen to collect BRTA's Motor Vehicle Tax and other fees
FE Report | Thursday, 31 July 2008
Bangladesh Post Office (BPO) submitted 'expression of interest' (EOI) to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for appointment as a 'service provider' to collect BRTA's Motor Vehicle Tax (MVT) and other fees.
BRTA has sought EOI from financial and non-financial institutions by August 27 for the appointment of a service provider to collect MVT and fees.
BPO is now collecting MVT and other fees manually through its 91 post offices and has already taken steps to introduce online system at its different district level offices across the country to collect MVT and fees as per the BRTA's suggestion, said a senior BPO official.
"We've already sent a Tk 0.373 billion proposal to the Finance Ministry for implementation of nationwide online service to collect MVT and fees," the official told the FE.
He said the BPO have already introduced an online service incorporating an especial MVT collection software at the city's two post offices.
As per the suggestion of BRTA, BPO is now providing online service in its General Post Office (GPO) and Mirpur BRTA Post Office.
BPO charges three per cent as commission on the amount it collects and in 2007-08, it earned Tk 133 million (Tk 13.38 crore), the BPO official said.
According to BPO and BRTA, the government earned around Tk 4.0 billion (Tk 400.34 crore) as taxes and registration, transfer, fitness certificate, route permit and driving licence fees in the last fiscal year.
"The online service will ease the MVT and fees processing. It will replace the age-old manual system, which is full of errors, costly and time-consuming. The new system is guaranteed to be error-free," a BRTA official said.
BRTA has a plan to start the nationwide online service by October next, the official added.
