BPPL to get more engine generator sets from Rolls-Royce
Friday, 4 November 2011
Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has announced a US$22 million contract to supply eight Bergen B32:40 16V reciprocating engine generator sets to Baraka Patenga Power Limited (BPPL).
The engines will power BPPL's 50mw power plant under construction at Patenga, according to a British High Commission press release, reports BSS.
Commenting on the announcement, Head of UK Trade & Investment (Bangladesh) Justin Davies said, "As a close partner in Bangladesh's achievements, we want to further our existing commercial relationship, explore business opportunities that would benefit both countries. Tackling the power issue in Bangladesh is crucial to helping meet its Millennium Development Goals."
Davies said the UK energy industry has a wealth of experience and expertise to offer Bangladesh in this connection and this is another example of the willingness of British firms to help Bangladesh meet its challenges.
Chairman of Baraka Patenga Power Limited Faisal Ahmed Chowdhury said BPPL is delighted to award this important contract to Rolls-Royce "whom we selected due to their track-record of delivering efficient and reliable power generation technology and services across the globe."
The Patenga power plant will play an important role in supporting the country's economy, supplying electricity to the national grid, he added.
This order brings the Rolls-Royce fleet of B32:40 16V engines sold to customers in Bangladesh to 48 units.
These are capable of delivering over 300mw of power and valued at circa $150 million.
In July 2011, BPPL signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board to develop the 50mw independent power plant project on a 'Build-Own-Operate' basis for a term of 15 years.
BPPL is a 51 per cent subsidiary of Barakatullah Electro Dynamics Limited.
